Notices

Notices

Our Notices page lists notices of the filing of applications, application amendments, and notices of AER hearings.

Hearings

Hearings

Hearings for energy applications cover everything from gas and oil wells and pipelines, to sour gas processing plants and major oil sands and coal projects. Our decision to hold a hearing is made on a case-by-case basis.

Decisions

Decisions

We publicly share our decisions on applications according to the Responsible Energy Development Act and the Alberta Energy Regulator Rules of Practice.

Compliance

At the end of the day, Albertans own the province’s energy resources, so developing them is a privilege—not a right.

Every company must follow the rules to make certain that energy development happens safely. If they don’t, they’ll face serious consequences. But how do we decide what those consequences will be, and what our options are to bring a company into compliance?

OneStop

OneStop is a breakthrough technology that streamlines the way companies submit applications to us and the way we review them, and it supports better-informed decision making by helping us focus on higher-risk activities.

Project Closure

Reclamation

Reclamation

Imagine a 1900-hectare coal mine transforming into a picturesque wetland filled with lush trees, native grasses, and plenty of wildlife. This transformation over many years is known as “reclamation,” and it’s not only possible, it’s required in Alberta.

Suspension and Abandonment

Suspension and Abandonment

Companies profiting from the province’s energy resources must safely and responsibly suspend and abandon (“decommission”) their energy infrastructure, such as wells, pipelines, and facilities.

 Liability Management Programs and Processes

Liability Management Programs and Processes

Energy companies operating in Alberta must make sure they are prepared to meet their obligations at the end of a project’s life. Our programs help to protect Albertans from bearing the costs of project closure.

Rules and Directives

Rules and Directives

We are responsible for administering provincial legislation designed to ensure that Alberta’s energy resources are developed responsibly.

Our directives set our requirements or processes that companies must follow to comply with provincial legislation. If companies don't comply, we will take enforcement action.
